Finnish Winter sport: Snow Rowing is a new way to hack it through snow and ice

World’s first competition of Snow Rowing held in Savo

Finland is long known for its snowy winters and skiing. But only recently did the Finns come up with an innovative to make their way through snow: snow rowing.

Snow rowing is a mixture of fun, exercise and transportation. It gets you easily from one place to another while enjoying the beautiful Finnish nature outdoors.

Snow rowing is based a new regional invention, the snow rowing machine. The machine is a combination of traditional rowing boat oars and skis mounted on a device on which you can sit on while rowing across snow or ice. The machine is being further developed with the aid of the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

In accompanying video Jussi Vatanen, one of the most well-known actors in Finland, demonstrates how to row across snowy field in Savo, in eastern Finland. Currently Vatanen can be also seen in one of the leading roles in a Finnish war time feature film the Unknown Soldier (2017) by Aku Louhimies. The movie has also been acknowledged all around Europe.

In addition, Ponsse’s chairman of the board, Juha Vidgrén, and multiple world champion in Wife Carrying, Joni Juntunen re be seen in the video. Ponsse is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of forest machines.

The inventor of the snow rowing machine is Onni Nissinen who comes from Vieremä in Savo. The people of Savo are known for being creative and competitive – some say even crazy. It’s no wonder the world’s first snow rowing competition will be held on 18th February 2018 in Vieremä.
